Summary
Underwent 15 sessions of HELP apheresis and six sessions of plasmapheresis for long-COVID-associated microclots, and remains on anticoagulants years later despite repeated attempts to stop them. He had been severely ill since a COVID-19 infection in late 2020, and by September 2021 was largely confined to a darkened room wearing earplugs and a blindfold, with relentless nausea and extreme sensitivity to other people's presence, including his own children. The apheresis and plasmapheresis improved his heart palpitations, cognition, sleep and other problems, but the piece is explicit that "no one symptom is cured." Nearly three years on he still needs the anticoagulants to maintain his gains, indicating the improvement has required ongoing maintenance rather than resolving on its own.
