This Is Why I Quit Exercise Therapy

Condition
ME/CFS
At worst
Severe (mostly bedbound)
Ill for
5 months
Published
Aug 2017

Summary

Graded exercise therapy, prescribed by an NHS specialist, started with five minutes of walking a day and increased weekly, reaching six minutes in week two and continuing upward. She had been unwell for roughly five months, with flu-like exhaustion, joint pain, and headaches severe enough to force her to stop working, before the program began. By week four she was crashing and needing bed rest after each session, and by week eight she could no longer make coffee, shower, or dress herself. She quit after a severe crash brought crushing chest pressure, burning sensations, and cognitive dysfunction lasting weeks, with no benefit from the program reported at any point. No return to the program, and no improvement from it, is described.
