Summary
Doug Lindsay, a former college track athlete, spent 20 years ill and 11 bedridden after being diagnosed with bilateral adrenal medullary hyperplasia, an extremely rare condition with only 32 prior known cases. An IV drip of Levophed gave temporary relief, and he ultimately had his adrenal medulla surgically removed using a technique he found in a 1923 Argentine veterinary paper. Six months after surgery he could walk miles again and nearly a decade later works as a consultant, but still takes many medications and cannot handle physically demanding work.
